stay for a bit
the coffee is brewing
the cat is asleep on your clothes
your favourite butter cookies
just arrived from the bakery
even your grandma’s college picture
kept near the basket of oranges
smiles at you, calls you nearer
stay for a bit longer

we’ll marinate some fish
we’ll go shopping for whole spices
we’ll chat with the barber’s wife
details of news, the nature of life
and the travel agent’s shop, will be emptier
without your adult jokes, the posters
on his wall, Malta and Istanbul
ask you to leave tomorrow
stay a little bit more

the evening breaks into amber
the windows gleam, searching for your reflection
the cat stands inside, watching the sundown
asking you to return sooner
stay till the night gets over
